Procurement and State aid law matters have been an integral part of the BBH group’s legal and organisational advice for decades. Recently, BBH advised the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport in the tendering of 8,000 fast-charging points by 2026 with public funding amounting to 1.8 billion euros for their construction and operating costs. Now, the BBH group joins forces with another prominent law firm in these fields of expertise.
The renowned Berlin-based procurement and State aid law boutique Müller-Wrede merges with its entire team into the BBH group. BBH welcomes lawyers Malte Müller-Wrede and Christoph von Donat as partners, lawyer Gabriele Quardt as partner of counsel. They are followed by their entire team with a total staff of 16 (10 of which are lawyers).
Malte Müller-Wrede, specialist lawyer for procurement law, and the procurement law expert and BBH partner Dr. Roman Ringwald will have their own 30-strong team specialising in domestic and European procurement law. Both have been advising public contracting authorities and bidders, project companies and other organisations for many years and know each other from many years of collaborating on various major projects.
Lawyer Dr. Roman Ringwald: “Müller-Wrede is regarded as one of the top law firms for procurement law issues and has an excellent reputation as a litigation firm with an outstanding track record when it comes to review procedures. Our approaches perfectly complement each other. Both our firms not only have an in-depth understanding of the market, but also attach great importance to the scientific analysis and monitoring of our legal practice area. BBH is clearly the leading firm in energy law in this regard. Malte Müller-Wrede publishes various standard commentaries on procurement law, annotates legislation himself and is a member of the board of editors of the renowned procurement law journal ‘Vergaberecht’. This is just one of the ways in which he has helped shaping the field of procurement law.”
Lawyer Malte Müller-Wrede: “This merger is a perfect match for me, too. And not least because we are two of a kind. It brings together two units that have a profound understanding of infrastructures. Our specific practice areas create various synergies: While we primarily advise on prominent digitalisation projects as well as projects in the building construction and civil engineering sector – regarding the construction of installations, roads and bridges –, BBH is a leading law firm in advising on electricity grids, hydrogen networks, charging infrastructures, ports and water networks. Furthermore, we know Roman Ringwald and his team from joint projects and admire their work. Together, we will form not only one of the largest, but probably even the most potent procurement law teams on the market. And there are other BBH building and procurement law experts in Munich as well.”
And there is another apparent reason for the merger:
Christoph von Donath and his team will strengthen the BBH group’s EU law practice, particularly regarding State aid law, public funding and European procedural law. Also in this area, both units benefit from numerous synergies and their particular proficiency in the interdisciplinary work with engineers, consultants, public auditors and tax advisors. As was to be expected, ministries, project developers and companies are increasingly calling on the expertise of the BBH group and Müller-Wrede in transformation projects to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality. Together with BBH’s Brussels office, which specialises in EU and UN energy and environmental policy, BBH has always provided its clients with a unique and now significantly reinforced expertise.
With more than 700 employees, 7,000 clients and 7 offices, the BBH group is a leading provider of advisory services to energy and infrastructure companies and their customers. Energy and supply companies, particularly public utilities, municipalities and local authorities, industrial companies and international groups are among its core clients. The BBH group assists these and many other companies and organisations with legal, business and strategic advice.
